The Virginia Gold Cup

The Virginia Gold Cup is a tradition with my fellow Mary Baldwin graduates. They go every year, but since I'm on the opposite coast I don't make it as often. These are pictures from the 1997 races, so they are pretty old. That year that our group had a "rail space". Usually we get lawn seating, which is more removed from the course but often has a better view. In 2000 I sprung for a tent spot, which was really a lot of fun. I hope I'm able to do that again in the future.

Gold Cup is a somewhat of a dress-up affair. Ladies wear summery dresses, and the men wear ties, usually. It's always held the same day as the Kentucky Derby, so you get a little of that atmosphere.

Back in the Baldwin days there was a popular T-shirt that commemorated a similar event. It pictured a couple dressed up for the race, alcoholic beverages in hand, saying "I didn't see any horses!" In fact, many folks treat Gold Cup mostly as a social affair. It is a place to see and be seen. I do try, however, to get a glimpse of some of the races at least!
